VW Devon Moonraker Conversion

The Devon Moonraker was a combination of the Caravette and the Eurovette conversions which where earlier buses.  It combined the best of the two conversions and clearly slotted in to growing market for people who wanted a little more luxury when out on the road.  The advertising literature at the time stated that the Moonraker was “the ultimate in luxury”, and it certainly lived up to its name!

The Devon Moonraker had many new features including a seat that was behind the drivers seat that faced either forward or backward, which created a early people carrier type of internal format.  This unique feature was accomplished by sliding the seat off the rails and turning it around.  Another new feature of the Devon Moonraker was the fact that the cooker could swing out when the sliding door is open, so one could cook outside when the weather is good enough.  Whilst this feature isn’t totally unique and can be seen on Split Screen Volkswagen (pre 1967), conversions it does give room for the extra table that can be fitted behind the bulkhead.

Another great feature of the Devon Moonraker was the fact that one could use the reversible seat that is behind the driver’s seat to form a low level single bed, should one be traveling alone.  Should one require a double bed then the table tops are used by fitting them in to the back rest and then using the table legs as bed legs.  A single bed can be made in this way as well; the only difference is that this single bed is around 18” higher than the low level one.
