VW Slumberwagen Conversion

A special camping conversion carried out by European Cars in the early 60's incorporating a Calthrop elevating roof.  Most often this conversion is referred to as the "European Cars", conversion but we know different.  The Slumberwagen is perhaps the most intriguing and strange looking conversions ever made (closely followed by the Palomino).

The roof was made by a company called Calthrope and was the first elevated Volkswagen camper Roof (patented 1958/59), and is in out opinions the most hilarious contraption we have ever seen.  We must not laugh because Calthrope where in fact one of the most well established and respected coach builders in operation at the time.  They built conversions for Commer, Chevrolet and Bedford.  Check out these brochure images.  We are not sure but these vehicles do not look like VW transporters so we must assume that they just changed the roof slightly to fit the VW transporter.

Please if anyone has any more info or images of this fine camper then please let us know
