A common fault with many Kombis especially 1800 and 2000cc engines is throttle adjustment.
Open engine bay and have someone depress accelerator pedal to the floor slowly-engine off of course- then see how much throttle movement is left on lever at carburettor.
In many cases engines have been getting max of 75% throttle.
