Hi, I am new here.
My enquiry is about the vin plate serial number.
Your page on the vin/chasis number was very useful, wish id found it first b4 trying loads of other sites and having a conversation with the people at Volkswagen who passed me off to someone else who put me through to an answering machine lol
I know know what the first part stands for and what my serial number is but unfortunately it still doesnt conclude my question which is when was mine built?
As my chasis says 2332 which means Type 2 Kombi built anytime between 1st august 72 and 31st July 73. Mine was first registered by its First owner 29/03/73 and i want to know if it was actually manufactured b4 01/01/73 to make it tax exempt. So will my serial number tell me this and is there a system i can put it into to find out?
I know previous owners have paid tax and its beenn sorn for 6yrs by the person i have just brought it off and he brought it as a project, gutted it all out then left it in a barn for 5yrs as an empty shell with no doors, windows or roof!!
Previously i know that if it was made before 31/03/72 then it was exempt but the government have recently put it up to 01/01/73, so no-one has tried to get it under the new guidelines.
So if anyone has any ideas that may help i am all ears.
Thankyou

Hi,
I have exactly the same issue, as my imported Kombi was registered in Switzerland on the 3rd March '73. My chassis number has the same vague date range as Wally73's has.
For reasons of avoiding road tax, I'd like to know if the build date was possibly before 1st Jan '73.
Anyone know the secret code, please?

For Type 2s, the details may be found on the plate behind the left-hand front seat. Look for a sequence like the one above. Mine (1974-model) is in the bottom left-hand corner of the plate; week 43, day 5 (Friday). I think some numbers on the plate are the factory extras fitted. The factory paint code figures for this should be 07 (Brilliant Orange) and 06 (Pastel white) but I see no certain indication of that.

The following vehicles were made before the end of Dec 1972, and qualify for historic vehicle class with free road tax (at the moment!) :-

Buses up to 2*32102496 (where * is a single digit representing the model type).

Some Campers were fitted out in the UK and may be around a year older than their registration date, so it's worth checking M-reg vehicles. Some other VW models took a while to sell, and may have considerably later registrations than their manufacture date.

Contact VW at Milton Keynes 0800 711 811 for a confirmation letter for DVLA.

Contact Stiftung Auto Museum Volkswagen, Dieselstraße 35, 38446 Wolfsburg 1, Germany for a 'Birth certificate' which now costs 20 Euros (I think).

Surprisingly, the Camper was not registered until October 1974, with an 'N' year plate. However, now the UK Government has withdrawn the free tax concession for vehicles manufactured after December 31st 1972, it won't save me the tax after all. If this page helps you claim your rightful free tax, I shall be very pleased for you.
