We have a 73 Bay and it has an ugly roof, a full length Sheldon thing (fibreglass roof extension).  The point is, we want to change it for something more traditional, but dont know how to go about it.  Anyone got any ideas?

Hi and welcome. Depends what is under your hi-top, and what you mean by traditional, do you want a big sun-roof, or a pop top? If there is a lot of the original vw tin roof there you will have a choice, however a lot of people would love your hi-top, its your van and your choice! good luck!

No-one ever reads this bit anyway!

Roof looks great to me. Trust me I had a Palamino roof which looks like a boat but for space and conversion it was the best i have ever had

Cheers

thanks for the reply .... im afraid i dont like it, but the camper will be used for sleeping and cruising, so we dont really need a high top, we are having a full length sun roof made for it.   So will have this top in the garage until we get rid of it!!

Ta muchly

Ok, if you are going to remove the hi-top, they are usually held on with mastic, best way is to use a cheesewire, available from motor factors and used to remove modern bonded windscreens etc Have fun!

Be careful, make sure the van has been fitted with braces otherwise it will have no strenght when you take of the top

thanks for that.  It has the original roof spa's in place still.  The sun roof (coming soon) will brace it up a bit more too.

I have a roof just like it on my 1977 bay; and it looks fine in my opinion. As far as high-tops go, i couldn't have wished for a better one, designwise. On a more practical note: I live in Belgium, and often take the bus for short weekend trips. Trust me, if (no when... :-s ...) it rains, i count my lucky stars that i do not have a "fancy and politically correct" westfalia pop-up roof ! :-)

I would't change it-there are so many advantages in having height in a camper.
You can't guarantee fine weather and cooking and getting dressed/undressed in a non poptop or extended roof is not that easy.
With the way prices are going it will probably have more value in future as rarer conversion rather than a late modifed canvas roof.
Just my opinion.
