60 years since the first Volkswagen bus!

It is now 60 years since Volkswagen produced the first Camper Van, and the company is hosting a series of celebrations at the Hanover Exhibition Centre in Germany this October. Though the VW Camper has a massive cult following today, it was originally based on a vehicle used to transport heavy panels around the Wolfsburg factory, which inspired the split-screen T1 van in 1947.

The weekend of October 5-7 begins with a convoy of classic Campers, leading to a display of VW vans of all ages. Those in search of rare parts are catered for in the form of a large autojumble and there are also further displays from clubs and camping enthusiasts. One of the highlights of the weekend is the open air cinema, showing films featuring VW Campers, such as Little Miss Sunshine, throughout the weekend.

An awards ceremony will complete the weekend with prizes for the oldest, most attractive and most original of each type of van, and the furthest journey. Weekend tickets are €25 per vehicle. For booking and further information see http://www.vwn.de.
