How to Tell If Your Driving Instructor is a Good One

Learning how to drive can be relatively easy but finding someone to teach you is often the major obstacle. Parents and friends are usually the ones showing new drivers the rules of the road but this can lead to short cuts and bad behavior masked by helpful tips and advice. Driving is a serious endeavor and such short cuts can lead to accidents. A far better alternative than that empty parking lot with a nervous parent or guardian in the passenger seat is a driving instructor.

Bay Window Wheel & Rim Sizes

VW Bay Window vans used two different rim sizes.

1968-70 have 5 bolts with a 205-6mm distance between adjacent holes and are called wide-5s (US).

71-79 buses had disck brakes and have normal looking wheels with a 5x112 bolt pattern. The rims are 5 1/2" wide  and the offset is ET39. We cant find out at the moment what ET stands for but it represents the distance in millimeters  from the centerline of the rim to the back of the bolt face.

Volkswagen Bay Window Firing Order

The firing order is 1-4-3-2. Looking at the engine from the rear (through the engine compartment).

3 1
4 2

These numbers are written on the tinware by the sparkplug holes of the Type 4 engine. The firing order is also written on the tinware above the ignition coil, and on the Type I engine it's stamped on the alternator stand. You will hopfully see (if your tinware isnt to rusty), the word Zundfolge which is German for "firing order".

Volkswagen and Google are working together to develop a revolutionary new navigation system.

Together with the graphics card manufacturer nVidia, a revolutionary new navigation system is being developed in Volkswagen's Electronics Research Laboratory (ERL) in Palo Alto, California. A brief history of the VW Camper - From BBC

This article was originally posted on the BBC website and can be found here A Brief History of the VW Type II Bus

The birth of the VW Type II (Type I being the Beetle) arose after World War II when the British found themselves running the VW factory in Wolfsburg Germany. Ben Pon, a Dutch VW importer, saw the motorised trolleys built using stripped down Beetle chassis and running gear taking parts around the vast factory in 1947. He sketched a design for a beetle-based van, which looked rather like a box on wheels, after he was inspired by these rudimentary but ingenious vehicles. Heinz Nordhoff took on this idea a year later when he took over as chief executive of Volkswagen and the first VW van was launched at the Geneva Motor Show in November 1949.

A history of the VW camper - from Wikipedia
The Volkswagen Type 2 was the second automotive line introduced by German automobile manufacturer Volkswagen. It was a van introduced in 1950, initially based on Volkswagen's first model, the Type 1, also known as the "Beetle". The Type 2 is generally considered to be the forerunner of modern cargo and passenger vans. The Type 2 spawned a number of imitators both in the United States and Europe including the Ford Econoline, Dodge A100 and the Chevrolet Corvan, the latter even adopting the Type 2's rear-engine configuration. Updated versions of this line are still being actively produced in international markets.
